Does he ever offer any career advice?
His latest book with Paul Begala was his best attempt to offer career advice. He is generally reluctant to offer specific career advice such as "here is what you ought to do". James is not comfortable telling people what path they should take in life. He was 35 before he ever traveled to New York or Washington and 42 before he won his first campaign or even had a credit card in his name. So, it is difficult for James to offer specific advice when his path was hardly one to emulate. He almost failed out of Louisiana State University and only after a kick in the butt in the Marine Corps did he take seriously a need to turn his life around.
